Afroza Hossain (Sara)

Based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Afroza Hossain Sara is an emerging writer-director known for looking at real events through the lens of Bengali folklore and the sensibilities of magical realism. With a strong academic foundation in drawing and painting, she emphasizes honest expression in her creative work while embracing evolving techniques to bring her stories to life. After completing her first short film, Song of Whales, she is developing a feature film on the same story. Another of her scripts, Song of Jhinuk, gained national and international attention by winning the West Meets East Screenplay Lab in January 2023. In September 2023, she was selected as a representative of the Bangladeshi animation film industry by the Embassy of France in Bangladesh and Alliance Française de Dhaka and was honored by presenting both of her films to the Honorable President of France during a cultural meetup held as part of his visit to Bangladesh. Later, in May-June 2024, she had the privilege to visit France to conduct market research and explore possibilities of France-Bangladesh animation film co-production. The one-month trip was arranged by the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka and funded by METIS|French Development Agency and the ICT ministry of Bangladesh.

Song of Whales is a 12-minute short film with a mother whale’s grieving song at its core. The film is produced by Team Platform, in association with Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, METIS|French Development Agency, and Goopy Bagha Productions.
