1883
Founded

"L'association nationale pour la propagation de la langue française dans les colonies et à l'étranger" is founded under the aegis of Paul Cambon and Pierre Foncin.  Alliance Française was founded on July 21, 1883 in Paris by a group of renowned humanists like Ferdinand de Lesseps, Louis Pasteur, Ernest Renan, Jules Verne, Armand Colin with the objectives of reinforcing friendship and solidarity between people through the promotion of the French language and cultural projects.

1884
First Established

Ferdinand de Lesseps, Louis Pasteur, Ernest Renan, Jules Verne, Armand Colin and others join the board of directors of the Alliance Française de Paris. The first Alliance Française in Europe opens in Barcelona, followed by others in Senegal, Mauritius and Mexico.

 

1886
Recognization

The Alliance Française de Paris is recognized as a public association.

1889
Branches

First Alliance in India, then in Australia, in Melbourne.

1902
Federation

First Alliance in Montreal and creation of a Federation of Alliances Françaises in the United States.

1904
Committess

The Alliance Française has 150 committees in France and 450 abroad.

1917
Dominican

First Alliance in the West Indies and Dominican Republic.

1919
Opening

Opening of the École pratique de langue française at 101 bd Raspail in Paris.

1940
Archives

The Alliance Française archives are taken to Berlin by the Nazis.

1943
Speech

General de Gaulle delivers a speech in Algiers reaffirming the Alliance's vocation.

1944
War

The Alliance Française de Paris reopens after the war.

1959
Established

Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD), established, Located in Dhanmondi,

1979
Record

Record year with 32,000 students at the Paris school.

2002
Modernization

Modernization of Alliances accelerates worldwide.

2006
Old Location

A new branch opened on Baridhara, which is now located in Gulshan

2007
Creation

The Alliance Française Foundation is created. The Fondation de l’Alliance Française (Alliance Française Foundation) is formed and recognized as a public utility. The Fondation de l’Alliance Française is the moral and legal reference of all the Alliances Françaises in the world. When one Alliance is formed, it asks the Fondation to recognize it, through an approval of its statutes.

2008
Network

The international network of Alliance Française is composed by 1,071 Alliances Françaises in 136 countries, 8,000 professors and 461,377 students. Nearly 6 million people attend cultural activities organized by the Alliances Françaises each year. Every Alliance Française is operated under local legislation and is managed by a committee made up of prominent personalities in respective countries

New name: Fondation des Alliances Françaises.
