Abir Abdullah

Abir Abdullah, a distinguished Bangladeshi photographer and educator, serves as the Photography Workshop Coordinator at the Alliance Française de Dhaka. Armed with a Masters in Marketing from Dhaka University, Abir’s journey in photography began with foundational courses at the Bangladesh Photographic Institute in 1993. His extensive background includes workshops, a diploma in photojournalism, and a prolific freelancing period from 1994 to 1995.

 

 

Abir’s impactful photographic career spans diverse genres, from corporate works to documentary photography. Notable milestones include a three-year seminar supported by the World Press Photo Foundation and a stint as a photographer at Sorvis in Norway. His dedication to the craft is further evidenced by a two-year project with Save the Children and teaching Photojournalism at Pathshala.

 

 

Abir Abdullah’s lens has earned him prestigious awards, including the Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography and the Alexia Foundation professional grant. His work has been showcased globally, with exhibitions in London, Amsterdam, San Francisco, and beyond. Noteworthy exhibitions include the “Reflections: Water and Life in Bangladesh” at The Association of Photographers Gallery in London (1999), his first solo exhibition on “War Veterans of Bangladesh” at Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts in Dhaka (2000), and participation in the Visa pour l’Image exhibition in Perpignan, France (2014 and 2021). Exhibited at the Zoom International Photojournalism Festival at Saguenay, Quebec, Canada in 2014, 2018 and 2021. Exhibited at the Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah in 2022.

The inauguration ceremony of the group photography exhibition by the students of photography workshop “Choloman Upakhyan” took place at La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) on 23 June, 2023. The photography exhibition was arranged by the students of the ‘Visual Storytelling Workshop’ of Alliance Française de Dhaka, coordinated by Abir Abdullah. Shafiqul Alam, Bureau Chief, France-Press, Tushar Abdullah, Editorial Head of Ekhon Television, and photographer of Map Photo Agency, Shafiqul Alam Kiron were present as the special guests at the event.

At the workshop, the participants were taught how to visually present a story through the thematic use of realistic or imaginary series of photographs. And the outcome has been wonderful which we get to see at the exhibition. “Choloman Upakhyan” consists of photographs of five visual lens based artists. They have chosen different social issues to portray through their own perspectives.
