The Quest of Bangla Typography

A solo exhibition titled ‘Brahmi to Bangla’ by noted painter and designer Sabyasachi Hazra was inaugurated along with the launching of his book titled ‘অ- In the Quest of Bangla Typography’ at La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) on Tuesday. Dhaka University Fine Arts Faculty Professor Shishir Bhattacharjee, architect and filmmaker Enamul Karim Nirjhar and prominent actor Afzal Hossain attended the event as the honourable guests. ‘Brahmi to Bangla’ represents the theme of the book, which is based on the discovery of the practical and aesthetic aspects of standard Bengali letters from a typographic perspective.

Sabyasachi Hazra

Sabyasachi Hazra, an accomplished artist, holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Fine Arts, specializing in Drawing and Painting, from the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka. With an impressive portfolio of approximately 3,000 book cover designs, he has garnered international recognition as a prolific illustrator. Sabyasachi’s creative expertise extends to serving as a creative director for various daily and weekly publications, as well as designing posters, logos, and brand guidelines. His exceptional contributions to the world of illustration have earned him numerous awards and accolades. Additionally, he is affiliated with prestigious institutions like the Bangla Academy and the Bangladesh Shilpokola Academy, cementing his status as a noteworthy figure in the global art and design community. In the realm of education and cultural enrichment, Sabyasachi authored two publications for children, “Chitrolipi,” a visual guide to the Bangla alphabet, and “Rong Tulite ChopChap,” an art appreciation guide. He has also played a pivotal role in the creation of coffee table books with a global appeal, including “Buddhist Heritage of Bangladesh,” “Bangladesh: Ekattor – Moment of Victory,” “Postage Stamps on the Liberation of Bangladesh,” “Coins from Bangladesh,” and “Robi Bichitra.”
