Climate Migrants in Bangladesh

Renowned photographer Abir Abdullah has explored the sufferings of climate migrants in his solo photography exhibition at La Galaire of Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi. Curated by Jewel Paul, the 15-day exhibition, titled Climate Migrants in Bangladesh, is featuring 34 selected photographs from Abir Abdullah’s series on climate migrants. The inaugural ceremony of the photography exhibition was held on November 12, 2021. British high commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Chatterton Dickson, chargé d’Affaires a.i. at French embassy in Bangladesh Guillaume Audren de Kerdrel, International Union for Conservation of Nature Bangladesh chairman Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Agence France-Presse bureau chief, Dhaka Shafiqul Alam and German-Bangladesh Economic Forum chairman Daniel Seidl were present as special guests at the opening ceremony.

‘With nearly 150 million inhabitants, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. As more warnings on climate change appear, Bangladesh is set to be an increasing source of climate migrants … Flooding has now become more extreme and unpredictable. Due to flooding, crops have been destroyed, houses designed to be portable for floodwater have been washed away. People have been forced to tear down their homes and move dozens of times as waters rise ever higher and when they return after the waters recede they often find their land disappeared,’ said Abir Abdullah.
